What this page practices

Find each difference with freshly generated subtraction practice and a matching answer key.

2.NBT.B.5: Add and subtract within 100 using place-value strategies.

Practice supports the cited skill; the worksheet does not cover every aspect of the full standard. Read the source standard.

A useful way to practice

  1. Compare the operands first. This maker puts the larger number first so the differences stay nonnegative.
  2. Ask the learner to explain one answer in words or with a drawing. Use the answer key to discuss the method as well as the result.
  3. Print at 100% scale and check that the paper size matches the PDF.

How these worksheets are made.

More practice, when you need it.

A few things before you print.

Are these worksheets free?

Yes. Create and download as many worksheets as you need for personal or classroom practice. No account or email address is required.

Can I include an answer key?

Yes. Select Include answer key to add a separate page with answers. You can also download the answer key on its own.

Can I print on A4 paper?

Yes. Choose A4 before downloading. Both A4 and US Letter layouts use printer-safe margins. Print at actual size, or 100%, in your PDF viewer.

How do I get a different set of questions?

Use New problems to change the seed. Keep the same seed and settings when you need to reproduce a page.

How should I choose the grade?

Grade labels are starting points. Ask the learner to explain one answer in words or with a drawing. Use the answer key to discuss the method as well as the result.

What does regrouping mean?

Regrouping exchanges a larger place-value unit when a column needs to borrow. Choosing With regrouping requires a borrow in every subtraction problem. Without regrouping excludes it.
